This involved clinically assessing 27 vibration exposed workers; on site at a British shipyard; for vibration white finger. Each subject’s cutaneous digital vascular responses to injected neuropeptides were assessed using planimetry & laser doppler flow mesurements. All subjects underwent digital cutaneous biopsy & immunostaining for neurovascular peptides. All of the above procedures were carried out on 6 patients with acrocyanosis & perniosis, 6 patients with Raynaud’s phenomenon associated with systemic sclerosis & 6 patients with primary Raynaud’s phenomenon.
The post also involved lecturing medical students, chiropodists, general practitioners & postgraduate students studying for the MRCP part II. I was one of the examiners for the MBBS Jenner Living Dermatology prize & project examiner to the London Foot Hospital. “The Neurovascular pathophysiology of Raynaud’s phenomenon”.
I have used the techniques of quantitative immunohistochemistry & also in-vivo pharmacology to study Raynaud’s phenomenon of different aetiologies. I acquired the necessary skills in immunohistochemistry at the Royal Free Postgraduate Medical School under Professor JM Polak for one year & then established them at UCL. I have also established new techniques in the laboratory and developed an objective test for Vibration White Finger. |
